Children's Art and Expression

We value children’s expression and honour their own unique creativity. Their creativity is encouraged, respected and supported. Through an emphasis on communication, multiple literacies and the expressive arts, children are invited to represent their thinking through many 'languages' and to share and communicate their experiences, ideas and theories.

Teachers recognise that there are many ways for children to show their thinking, knowing and their understanding of the world. We support children and provide them with the environment and materials to explore the ‘one hundred languages’ of children.

“Children are...........eager explorers with an intense desire and will to make sense of their world. Some of the most effective means they have for explaining things to themselves are drawings, painting and clay work. While using them to make images they communicate thoughts to others as well as themselves. “
— Ursula Kolbe, Rapunzel's Supermarket
“I learnt how to draw at Sophia’s.”
— Harris Lennox, 4 years, 11 months

Thank you to the child artists for your creativity, enthusiasm and the remarkable way you embrace the arts! And especially for your fine sense of colour.

The following gallery showcases mostly paint and drawing. Children experience collage, creating with loose parts, clay, group murals and wire.

We teachers are forever surprised and delighted by the everyday drawings, paintings and creations that the children proudly show us. They have a well spring of imagination that is so deep. They draw for this well spring effortlessly. To keep the art flowing it is our job to ensure that materials are the right ones and fit the purpose of the children’s work. Giving time and space and encouragement for this exploration is another important factor.
